EPF REFEREES QUESTIONS
Are EPF referee credentials recognised by USAP and Pickleball Canada?
Yes. A Level 1 EPF referee is recognized as a Level 1 referee in the US and Canada. Same for Level 2s.
I am an EPF referee and would like to officiate in a tournament in the USA. What should I do?
- Contact Gail Scavongelli
for validation.
- Contact the TD to confirm your attendance and adhere to the specific conditions, including the uniform requirements.
- Become a USAP champion member
and pay the respective fee
- Non-compliance to these conditions will lead to a disciplinary motion from EPF.
Am I allowed to issue EPF credentials in the USA?
No, no EPF credentials are to be issued in the USA. This would lead to immediate suspension of your EPF credential.
Is it possible for a European trainee to get a referee credential in the USA?
Yes, if you have a valid residence in the USA
- Contact Gail Scavongelli
, send her a confirmation of address in the USA and ask to be recognized as a “verified trainee”
- Become a USAP champion member
and pay the respective fee (valid for one year)
- Your Level 1/Level 2 USAP credential can be converted into an EPF credential once you move back to Europe.
I have an EPF referee credential, but I live in/am moving to the USA and want to officiate there.
- Contact Gail Scavongelli

- You will receive a USAP uniform and badge at your residence in the USA
- Non-compliance to these conditions will lead to a disciplinary motion from EPF.
I am an EPF Level 1/Level 2 Referee but identified as a Verified Trainee within the USAP system. Why am I not identified as a USAP Level 1 or 2?
Unless you have a residence in the US, you will not be identified as USAP Level 1 or 2 within the USAP website.
I would like to develop a pickleball referee program in my country.
Only the European Pickleball Federation and its country members (in their native language) can offer such courses. If you are part of the official pickleball refereeing body of your country, please contact Maria Munz for information on how to start your own national referee program. EPF will support you.
What is the difference between a referee trainer and a referee assessor?
A referee trainer is someone who supports and prepares the trainees/referees throughout their course until the day of the on-court assessment. A referee assessor is someone who observes and assesses trainees/referees on-court and has the power to issue credentials
.
Does my EPF credential need to be renewed? How is that process?
Are there any earning opportunities?
Compensation for referees can vary depending on the country or even the specific tournament. While some European countries have established systems in place, others are still developing their frameworks, and in many cases, discussions around referee compensation are ongoing.
Already a referee? Become a Referee Trainer or an Assessor.
Consider the opportunity to support others in becoming referees or better referees and giving back to the growth of the sport. Contact Maria Munz for news on upcoming courses.
I am an approved referee in my country. Is there an advantage on becoming an EPF referee?
EPF courses are exclusively in English. The advantage with learning the scripts in English and getting an EPF credential is that you will then be allowed to travel abroad and referee in international tournaments (across Europe, USA, Canada and other countries).
Which tournaments may EPF referees officiate?
Credentialed EPF referees are authorised to officiate at all pickleball tournaments, regardless of the organising body and European country. EPF referees shall wear the EPF uniform unless otherwise requested by the Tournament Organization and adhere to the specific conditions.

Is it allowed to issue credentials in Europe?

I am a USAP referee and would like to train trainees/referees in Europe. What should I do?
As a USAP-registered trainer in good standing, you are welcome to conduct training in Europe. You may either join a team delivering an EPF referee course or work independently with EPF’s approval. In the latter case, your instruction will be considered informal, as participants who are not yet credentialed by EPF will not have access to referee content on the EPF or USAP websites. You are not to share USAP copyrighted material and they are not to be considered “verified trainees” by USAP, because they are Europeans.
- Contact Maria Munz
for validation.
- Become a “Non-European Referee” member of EPF
and pay the respective fee (valid for one year)
- Non-compliance to these conditions will lead to a disciplinary motion from USAP
I am already a USAP referee. Can I become an EPF Referee?
Yes, if you have a residence in Europe.
